
“I want Iguodala”
Announced Tuesday afternoon, the Golden State Warriors will retire four-time champion Andre Iguodala’s #9 jersey ahead of their matchup against the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday, Feb 23. (12:30 p.m. tipoff) at the Chase Center.
Iguodala is now the seventh player in the Warriors franchise to have a jersey number following Alvin Attles (#16), Rick Barry (#24), Wilt Chamberlain (#16), Tom Meschery (#14), Chris Mullin (#17) and Nate Thurmond (#42) in the rafters at Chase Center.
Drafted in 2004 by the Philadelphia 76ers, Iguodala had a long and successful 19-year NBA career. He played for several teams including the 76ers, Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, and the Memphis Grizzlies he stoodout with one particular team. Upon joining the Warriors dynasty in 2013, Iguodala played a critical role in helping the team win the NBA Championship title in 2015 where he was also named the Most Valuable Player. During his tenure with the Warriors, they were able to go to the NBA Finals six times winning four. Iguodala retired from his career after 19 NBA seasons and 1,231 career-playing games in 2023.
“Andre will go down as one of the smartest, shrewdest, and most unique and successful players ever to wear a Warriors uniform,” Joe Lacob, Warriors co-executive chairman and CEO, said in a statement.
While he is one of the first in the franchise he’s far from the last and it is expected that his long-time teammates will join him upon retirement.
