Former NBA superstar point guard Stephon “Starbury” Marbury is getting pretty close to becoming a living idol in China these days.
Following a hit autobiographical musical last year—oh, and he starred in it, too; his own postage stamp this past April; and a bronze statue outside of the Beijing Ducks arena, Marbury now has his very own museum dedicated entirely to Marbury.
China unveiled the aptly titled “House of Marbury” museum this past Monday, according to ESPN.
“Today was one of the best days of my life in opening my own museum The House OF Marbury,” the 38-year-old guard said on Weibo, China’s version of Twitter. “I couldn’t have dreamed this dream for myself although God has created another miracle in this life for me. Without my teammates, coaches and fans from Beijing this wouldn’t be possible.”
The museum features a life-size wax replica of Marbury, a history of his career dating back to his childhood in Brooklyn, as well as a collection of his jerseys, which include the Timberwolves, Nets, Knicks, and Beijing.
“That’s in my heart,” Maybury told Xinhua News. “My Beijing jersey means more to me than any of them. I don’t see that because of the championship, but just because I’m here at home and I’ve had a support system.”
Saying goodbye to a meteoric and tumultuous career as point guard for several NBA teams—most markedly the New York Knicks and finally a very short-lived run with the Boston Celtics—Marbury joined the Beijing Ducks in 2010 and has since led the team to three Chinese Basketball Association championship titles in four years.
