We see athletes giving back and we like to recognize it. To us aside from the game what is being done outside of the sport that will leave a legacy, make an impact, and change lives for the better? Michael Bennett has a clear understanding of giving back. The Seattle Seahawks defensive end has decided to donate all of the endorsement money he receives this upcoming season to charities that support inner-city programs. Doesn’t stop there, he is also committing half of the proceeds he receives from the sale of his jersey to help support inner-city garden projects. Say it with us – SET Assist.
Michael told NFL Network’s Cole Wright, “It means a lot to me to be in this position. To be conscious to the social economics to different people in different communities… To have an opportunity for my family and my wife are dedicated to the same thing. My whole family is passionate about giving back and helping people in need.”
“I was inspired by Chance the Rapper to ‘think bigger’ when he pledged one million dollars to Chicago kids and their school system,” Bennett said in a statement. “So, I’ll be joining him by investing in the future of our youth. The system is failing our kids, and it will be up to the community and our leaders to help keep the hope alive by focusing on improving our education system and the future of our kids. Any company that decides to invest in me, just know that you’ll be investing in opportunities and providing inspiration for these families — many who feel unnoticed or go unmentioned.”
Michael has teamed up with Colin Kaepernick to send aid to Somalia and plans on going to Haiti with Cliff Avril to impact the Haitian community. Michael is not just talking the talk but walking the walk and he’s encouraging other NFL players to join in by using their platforms.
“At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how many touchdowns you’re going to get because your record is going to be broken. It’s about how many seeds you plant in your community to change kids’ minds, change their trajectory in life and give them the opportunity to do more,” Michael told NFL.com.
