Many of us played with Barbie dolls as little girls. We made up stories and scenarios with our dolls, changed their clothes and simply made believe with them. Misty Copeland is just like us. Her Barbie dolls gave her a way to dream and the ability to transform them into anything. Mattel now honors Misty Copeland with a Barbie in her image – the Misty Copeland Barbie.
The Misty Copeland Barbie is wearing a red ballet costume that is inspired by the Firebird costume Misty wore in her very first principle role that helped catapult her career. Misty will be performing Firebird again on May 18 and 19 at the Metropolitan Opera House. Misty was hands on with the creation of her doll. Celebrating her muscles, calves, thighs, and bust, unlike other Barbie dolls this doll was built with curves. Misty wanted to make sure that her doll was really made in her likeness. This doll is part of the Sheroes program which honors women who inspire young girls by breaking boundaries and expanding possibilities for a diverse group of women. Misty Copeland is most definitely a Sheroe.
