Colin Kaepernick caused quite the stir this NFL season by using his platform and first amendment rights to protest racial injustice in America. While it was great that he started the conversation, most of his critiques claimed – among other things – that this was not an effective protest because it was all talk and no action. Turns out the 49ers quarterback is up to a lot of good these days. You might have missed that though because it appears that most mainstream media realizes that they may have put their foot in their mouth and can’t seem to find a way to get it out long enough to praise his recent work.
In the face of fierce criticism, Kaepernick promised to back his protest by donating $100,000 a month for ten months plus all of the proceeds of his jersey sales from 2016 to organizations working in oppressed communities. That is a total of one million dollars. And he is putting his money where his mouth is.
So far, he has donated $300K. He has even taken a step further. Although donating money would have probably been enough for most people, Kaepernick launched the Know Your Rights Camp. The goal is to raise awareness on the importance of higher education, teach you how to give yourself the best possible chance at attending college, provide information on the stressful process of financial aid, and highlight how to stay safe with interacting with law enforcement.
